Abstract

This project aims at assisting NEV's longitudinal research project in its first year, which will be essentially devoted to the constructing of the empirical field. The main purpose of NEV´s research is to analyze how the legitimacy of key institutions for democracy is constructed, or jeopardized, by exploring the contacts between citizens and civil servants. In other words, we are concerned with how the performance of institutions affects citizen's perceptions of political legitimacy. The core research project will be based on a longitudinal panel study to be carried out with the citizens of São Paulo in a number of different areas. These "Study Areas" will be selected on the basis of the socio-economic profile of the population, how consolidated the urban occupation is, the prevailing type of occupation (residential, mixed, industrial, commerce) and presence or absence of substandard housing. Other characteristics will also count for identifying the "Study Areas": access to rights (health, public security, education, public and private -commercial services, leisure and cultural facilities, infrastructure, parks and so forth), and the social, economic and demographic profile of the population. This specific scientific initiation research will contribute to the construction of the empirical field, in terms of the determination of the "Study Areas", gathering information about social-economic, demographic and urban mobility and mortality/ morbidity identified as external causes (according to World Health Organization [CID 10]). These elements, organized by census sectors, will be useful in order to typify the residents, the heads of family and the domiciles situation, from 1980 to 2010, as well as the travel profile in the city São Paulo, from 1977 to 2007. Will also allows to investigate the concentration, the quantity and kind of the occurrences, the death registered place and year, and statistical information (using the smallest area units as possible, considering data secrecy aspects) that contains analysis concerning death dates, genders, ages, races, marital status and level of schooling of the victims.
