The purpose of this project is develop luminescent Ru-Mn binuclear compounds, stable to thermal and photochemical reactions to mimetize the chemical step of natural photosynthesis. For this we have synthesized the complex [(phen)2Ru(phen)perylene(phen)-Mn(CO)3Br] where phen = 1,10- phenanthroline. The complex prepared shows intense luminescence in the visible region, is stable both thermal and photochemical reactions and participates in intermolecular photoinduced electron transfer. Despite the promising results obtained so far, the prepared compounds have low aqueous solubility. Spectroscopic studies also indicate the formation of molecular aggregates. These results complicate the characterization of the complexes and their electrochemical and spectroscopic properties. On the other hand, the formation of molecular aggregates of the type J are of interest for technological application particularly in artificial photosynthesis. Therefore, investigating the type of aggregation in our complex and the elucidation of experimental conditions for the formation of these aggregates is of interest to both academic and technological point of view. For this reason we are requesting to grant a research internship abroad (BEPE) to accomplish stage of Postdoc in the lab of Professor José Manuel Gaspar Martinho of the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon (UTL), Lisbon/Portugal for six months for the investigation of molecular aggregation and its influence on the photophysical properties of the complexes prepared in this project. Professor José Manuel Gaspar Martinho specializes in photochemical and specifically in energy transfer and radiative and non- radiative formation of molecular aggregates , namely static and dynamic studies of excited state dimers (excimers). His laboratory experimental techniques has UV-vis absorption , fluorescence steady state and time resolved (order of ps), and fluorescence anisotropy spectroscopy fluorescence correlation (FCS). Techniques that are essential for the investigation of the formation and reaction mechanism of molecular aggregates. These studies have been meeting with our interest in the evaluation and elucidation of the mechanism of aggregation in the binuclear complex is being developed in our laboratory. (AU)
