Abstract

This project proposes an international internship of the PhD student Fernando Falci de Souza in the Centre for Musical Research (CMR), Bath Spa University, in the city of Bath, England. The internship will be supervised by Prof. Dr. Joseph Hyde, Professor of Music and Director of Graduate Courses in Composition, Creative Sound and Media Technology, and Creative Music Technology, as well an active artist and specialist in Visual Music (VM). The duration of the internship is of one year, from January 1st 2014 to December 31st 2014. The project is part of the Doctoral Program of the candidate in The Music Department of the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Adolfo Maia Jr., in the area of "Technological Interfaces for Sound Processes", with support from FAPESP, since July 2011 (being interrupted for 3 months in 2012, for a brief stage at McGill University, Canada). The objectives of this research are the study and construction of applications of the Sound Synthesis Method of Granular Synthesis (GS) in the creation of Visual Music (VM). The main project is divided in three stages. The first is the review of the Theoretical Fundamentals and the conceptualization of an Audiovisual Granular Synthesis (AVGS). The second stage consists of the design and implementation of computer systems to perform AVGS. The third stage, the internship, consists in the creation of Practical Applications of the AVGS, which for us is the best way to evaluate the expressive potential of our research. The BEPE internship in the CMR consists of a very important complementation for the main research, supervised by an expert of the recent research area of VM. We are convinced that it will improve our understanding of the field and allow the integration with a VM community, disseminating the results of this research internationally. (AU)
