Between two worlds: essay and utopia in the writing of history of Brazil, 1829-1851

Abstract

The present research project is related to the main project of the Master scholarship of Fapesp "Between two worlds: essay and utopia in the writing of History of Brazil, 1829-1851" (Process No. 2012/20484-0), with orientation by Professor Edgar Salvadori de Decca. We request the Bolsa Estágio de Pesquisa no Exterior (BEPE) of the Fapesp for the realization of activities at the Università di Bologna, in the Facoltà di Lingue e Letterature Straniere, under the supervision of Professor Roberto Vecchi. As a general objective, the intention of the study is to identify the different types of utopia which paved the nation and the Brazilian identity in the production of this historiography about Brazil and to verify how the essayistic style was present in the conformation of this national history between the decades of 1830 and 1840. With an internship abroad, it is expected that I will renew the theoretical contribution regarding the fields of utopia and of the essay (of which Professor Vecchi is a specialist), knowledge of the research methods used by the professor and his study group, as well as the exchange of experiences and contacts with foreign specialists.
