Iron overload is responsible for a plethora of tissue damages, all of them due to the onset of labile pools of iron that include redox-active forms of this metal in the organism. Ideal ligands for iron chelation therapy should be able to penetrate the overloaded tissue, bound the metal as a stable, non-redox-active form, ferry it out from cells and transfer it to circulatory chelators (either xenobiotic or transferrin). In this project the prospection of new marine chelators for iron is pursued, allying the expertises of a group dedicated to the prospection of natural marine products with a group dedicated to iron overload therapy. This is proposed as a means to contribute to the development of new clinical chelators for iron overload diseases. Also, the proponent intends to get hands-on experience on chromatographic techniques for the obtention of active natural products, with the aim of procuring new iron chelators specially among Brazilian marine organisms.
