The aim of this research is to analyse manuscripts and documents that may further our knowledge, both literary and historical, of Memorial da infância de Christo e Triumpho do divino Amor (first part), written by Soror Maria de Mesquita Pimentel, with a view to the preparation of a modern critical edition of this text. Published in 1639 but never, up to now, republished, Memorial is a key work for our understanding, within the context of Portuguese literature, of both gender and epic studies. It is for this reason that we are studying it as part of the broader post-doc project «O épico no feminino: Memorial da Infância de Christo e Triumpho do divino Amor de Soror Maria de Mesquita Pimentel (1581-1661) ». In order to advance scholarship, research will be carried out at Biblioteca Pública de Évora, (consulting its «Coleção de Pergaminhos» which contains manuscripts and documents relating to the convent where the writer lived), as well as the holdings of both Torre do Tombo and Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal, in Lisbon, which will no doubt help us to clarify a number of points that are still obscure, relating to the life and the work of this writer. The proposed stay will also allow for the critical examination of two manuscripts that were originally planned as the continuation of Memorial: a second part, entitled Vida e milagres de Christo, structured in 13 Cantos, and a third part, Memorial da Paixão de Christo e Triumpho do divino Amor, divided in 11 Cantos.
