Abstract

Dies steels used for molding plastics, such as AISI P20, contain high content of alloy elements, like Cr, Ni and Mn for hardening by quenching in large dimensions of parts. However, such an elements become expensive the final product. VP100 steel provided by Villares Metals S/A was developed to be hardened slower than the traditional quenching, due to the elements like Ti and V, which form inferior bainite with homogeneous hardness. For 4 years, machinability of the VP100 steel has been researched in technological-scientific projects with universities and industries, which in turn have given feed-backs for improving its machinability properties. Thus, Villares Company has released the material with variations of some alloy elements contents, as a result of theses feed-backs aiming at improving the material machinability. However, the scientific production until now has not concerned with surface integrity after machining. Based on this gap and objecting to contribute with better understanding of surface integrity behavior, this research project aims to investigate the influence of cutting parameter (finishing end milling) on residual stress of workpieces, once residual stress governs the moulds fatigue life. Therefore, mechanical (cutting force) and thermal (cutting heat) effects from milling finishing parameters will be correlated to the residual stress profile of workpieces measured by X-Ray Diffraction Method. This scientific proposal will be part of a global project between USP-São Carlos and UNESP-Ilha Solteira through junction and complementation of two MSc. researches about residual stress by using Blind-Hole Method and heat transfer by applying Finite Element Method both for end milling VP100 steel.
