Traditionally, Passifloraceae is subdivided into tribes Paropsieae and Passifloreae, belonging to this we have the genus Passiflora L., the most representative of the family. The occurrence of extrafloral (EFN) in Passifloraceae species is very common and its presence as well as its form, has been extensively used as a diagnostic feature for species in this group. However, in Passiflora foetida the extrafloral glands, previously described as nectaries, when the chemical nature of the exudate was analyzed, this structures were recognized as resin glands, anatomically distinct of the EFN. Thus, we propose to carry out a broad anatomical, ultrastructural and phytochemical study of the glands of eleven species in Passiflora (P. sidaefolia M. Roem., P. palmeri Rose, P. foetida L., P. miersii Mast., P. serratodigitata L., P. incarnata L., P. truncata Regel, P. organensis Gardn., P. morifolia Mast., P. suberosa L. and P.deidamioides Harms), seeking to establish the nature of the glands and their differentiation within an evolutionary context. The morphologic, anatomical and ultrastructural aspects of foliar glands will be analyzed in the pre-secretory and secretory fases, using the usual techniques of anatomy, electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Histochemical analyzes will be used for the in situ identification of substances stored (total polysaccharides, sugars, pectin, starch, phenols, terpenoids, acids and neutral lipids, fatty acids and lipids). Chemical analysis will be performed in the glands exudate, identifying carbohydrates (with high-performance anion exchange chromatography - HPAEC / PAD), amino acids (with high performance liquid chromatography - HPLC) and lipids (with thin layer chromatography - TLC). The results will be compared between species, and different glands in the same species (when present), and subsequently compared with data available in the literature.
