Abstract

In this project we intend to study the effects of competing interactions in two different systems. As the quantum spherical model is an excellent laboratory in the context of quantum phase transitions, we wish to study the properties of quantum spherical model with competing interactions in order to construct and analyze the phase diagram, characterizing the modulated phases. In the field of liquid crystals, we are interested in the competing interactions in the discrete Maier-Saupe model by following the analogy with the ANNNI (Axial-Next-Nearest-Neighbor-Ising) model. In general, the competing interactions are able to produce the modulated phases that, in the case of liquid crystals, can be associated with the cholestetic structures. These two proposals involve besides analytical calculations, numerical aspects and computational simulations. (AU)
