Abstract

This research project seeks to ascertain how the Portuguese newspapers portrayed in its pages the presence of Brazilian footballers and coaches who defended the Portuguese National Team in two different periods. For coaches, we have initially the presence of Octavian Martins Glória (better known as Otto Glória) in charge of the team lusa World Cup Football 1966. The other is the gaucho coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, who remained in charge of the selection of Portugal from 2002 to 2008 (this period stand out in fourth place in the 2006 World Cup and runner-up 2004 European). For players who obtained Portuguese nationality, we have Deco (Anderson Luís de Souza, naturalized in 2002), Pepe (Kepler Laveran Lima Ferreira, 2007) and Liedson (Liedson da Silva Muniz, 2009). The research aims to investigate how the Portuguese press operated clipping levels and reconstruction of the notion of Brazilianness in the presence of these Brazilian footballers and coaches acting for Selection of Portugal in international competitions. We hypothesized that, contrary to what occurred in 1966, when the presence of Otto Glória in Selection Portuguese had positive acceptance of the public and the press Lusitania, the new "Brazilian invasion" of the beginning of the XXI Century was full of tensions and conflicts , which won wide voice in the Portuguese press, but ended up being largely silenced by the Brazilian press. To account for these readings, the notion of Brazilianness will be understood here as a distinctive feature of the country and the Brazilian, from the seminal contribution of sociologists and anthropologists such as Gilberto Freyre, Sérgio Buarque de Hollanda, Darcy Ribeiro and Roberto Da Matta. From concepts Discourse Analysis of French, the research will seek to examine the discourse and textual imagery of the following Portuguese newspapers: Diário de Notícias, Público, Jornal de Notícias, A Bola, Record and O Jogo.
