Abstract

With the advent of implants, there was a need of an ideal alveolar process, with thickness and height to permit a ideal installation of the dental implants to rise successful treatment. However, after the loss of teeth, will occur a reduction in the height of the alveolar crest and trabecular bone, limiting the installation and rehabilitation with implants. Among the several surgical techniques available for the rehabilitation of atrophic maxilla, the filling the defects with bone grafts is the gold standart method, besides of the necessity of additional surgery to remove the graft. However, the morbidity of the donor site leads to the search for alternatives to the use of alloplastic materials. The ideal graft material should be osteogenic, osteoconductive and osteoinductive. Beta-Tricalcium Phosphate, used since the 70s, is a compound of calcium and phosphorus with chemical and crystalinity similar with human bone. ChrOnos (Synthes ®) is one of the commercial form of Beta-Tricalcium Phosphate and it is completely synthetic and presented osteoconductive potential. The objective of this study is to evaluate, by histomorphometric analysis, the potential osteoconductive of the ChrOnos in the bone repair of critical-size defects in rat calvaria.
