Abstract

The proposal is part of FAPESP thematic project "Generation of alcohol production scenarios as support for the formulation of public policies (...)" (No. 2008/58160-5), and has the general goal a greater knowledge of connections between the expansion of the cultivation of sugar cane and demographic dynamics in the state of São Paulo. The significant increase in the area planted in various regions and the consequent increase in production of sugar cane in the state in recent decades has been accompanied by fluctuations in productivity, investment in mechanization, introduction of new technologies and changes on the demand profile by working man in the sector. Particularly for municipalities more involved, for good or ill, this process may have important repercussions on the local economy, demographic and social dynamics. This proposal addresses the organization, systematization and analysis of demographic information (Census and PNAD, IBGE, and Health Information Systems and Civil Records, among others), and support for analyzes of demographic dynamics in regions and municipalities considered the larger project, concerning migration, the distribution of the workforce due to the economic activity and state of residence and, in particular, trends and differentials regional health profile according to the main causes of illness and death (epidemiological profile). Therefore, as a starting point, the counties and regions of the state will be classified and grouped according to their involvement with the recent expansion of the ethanol industry. Later on, we will develop analyzes of the trends and regional differentials in health profile of such municipal groupings, seeking the possible connections with the socioeconomic and demographic dynamics linked to production and sugar industry.
