Biofuel cell (BFC) are biodevices that converters chemical energy in electric energy, where biocatalysts (enzymes or microorganism) are used in the redox reaction. In the case of BFC type enzymatic, enzymes are used in the surface cathodic and/or anodic and they are responsible for accelerating the conversion of substrates in products. The state-of-the-art indicates that enzymatic BFC can be implanted and used as energy converters for pacemakers, insulin pumps, neural implants, electrical biostimulators and drugs delivery devices. However, the power density for implantable BFC developed until now is not sufficient to feed an electric circuit present in medical devices. Thus, this project aims to evaluate the electrochemical properties of glucose/O2 BFC in order to improve the electrocatalytic efficiency of the flexible carbon fiber (FCF) electrodes. For the bioanode preparation, glucose oxidase and glucose dehydrogenase will be used, whereas for the construction of biocathode, bilirubin oxidase enzyme will be used. In order to improve the electrons transfer at the interface electrode/enzymes, the surface of FCF will be modified with redox mediators, such as neutral red, polyneutral red and benzyl viologen. The electrocatalytic efficiency of the electrodes will be evaluated by cyclic voltammetry, polarization curves, as well as other techniques. Finally, the performance of BFC will be evaluated.
