Abstract

An experiment will be carried out to evaluate the influence of organic zinc and manganese dietary supplementation on the incidence and severity of pododermatitis, carcass lesions (bruises, scratches, cellulitis, dermatitis, and dermatosis), incidence and severity of bone darkening, myopathies of the breast muscle, carcass yield, meat quality (L* value, drip loss and cooking loss), and litter quality (moisture content, caking rate, and ammonia volatilization rate), of broilers. In total 1200 one-d-old Ross 708 broilers will be housed at a density of 12 birds/m2 for 49 days, distributed according to a completely randomized experimental design with four treatments: A- Inorganic control (40 ppm inorganic Zn), B- Organic Zn (40ppm), C- Control plus 40 ppm added organic Zn, D- Organic Zn plus 40 ppm organic Mn, with 15 replicates of 20 birds each. At 28 days of age, five birds from each pen (300 total) will be processed at the Auburn Poultry Processing Plant to evaluate skin lesion, carcass and parts yield, incidence and severity of bone darkening. On day 41, all broilers will be submitted to footpad gross examination to score their lesions. At 49 days of age, additional five birds per pen (75 per treatment) will be processed. Chilled carcass weights will be collected after two hours of static ice/water chilling and carcasses will be graded for defects. Breast fillets (overnight deboned) will be scored for lightness, drip and cooking loss, the incidence and severity of various myopathies (i.e., green muscle disease, woody breast, necrosis and white striping. Litter samples will be collected from all pens at the end of experiment and evaluated for pH, moisture content and ammonia concentration. (AU)
