Abstract

Obesity is the most common nutritional disease of our time and may alter the pharmacokinetics of the general anesthetics, due changes that it cause in the animal body. Medical studies have shown that dosing propofol according to lean body mass in the anesthesia induction of the obese human avoids overdose and side undesirable effects like apnea and arterial hypotension. In veterinary medicine, propofol is the most widely used general anesthetic for induction of anesthesia and there is no much information about the anesthetic doses used in obese dog. The objective of this study is to compare the quality of anestesia induction by calculating the dose of propofol based on lean body weight with the dose of propofol based on the total body weight in obese dogs (body score e 8 and percentage of total body fat more than 30%). Sixty dogs will be used and divided into three groups: Group 1 or control (CON) - composed by 20 animals with ideal bod condition score, Group 2 (LBW) - composed by 20 obese animals whose dose of propofol used will be based on the lean body weight and group 3 (TBW) - also composed by 20 obese dogs and in this group the propofol dose will be based on total body weight. The body composition of all dogs will be determined by the technique of deuterium isotopes dilution. The anestesia quality of anesthesia in the three groups will be evaluated through the use of variables. Parametric statistical tests and nonparametric will be used to analyze the results and for comparison between the groups. (AU)
