Centralities of leisure in Presidente Prudente - SP: flows, tensions and territorialities on Parque do Povo

Abstract

The Parque do Povo, located on the city of Presidente Prudente - SP is result of a wide restructuring process on the urban space, culminating in the implementation of this major leisure equipment, transforming the entire area of its surroundings, previously segregated and undervalued, in one of the city's highly valued locations. In the early 90's, settled, adjacent to the park, the major shopping center of the city, the Prudenshopping, and more recently, this area has attracted private investments directed to entertainment establishments, which cohesively, form a centrality of leisure in the city Taking this location as the focal point and the young as actors, we will seek through this research proposal the understanding of how occur the sociability processes produced by many different groups of youth who attend that space. Our intention is to understand the attraction that the equipments and commercial establishments of leisure and entertainment, located on Parque do Povo and in its surrounding area exert over the youth from poor peripheral neighborhoods of the city of Presidente Prudente, highlighting the role of the Prudenshopping and Parque do Povo, and the relations between public and private spaces in this context. Also concerns us understanding the ways the young people situate themselves at this, which is one of the leading spaces related to the city night entertainment, either during the day time, or the night time, by the fact that young people from other social classes and greater consumption conditions also converge to this location.
