Abstract

Cerrado and Atlantic rainforest are phytogeographic Brazilian domains that show differences in their geographical distribution, climate, water availability, and types of soil. Comparative wood anatomy helps in understanding the relations between the environmental factors and the wood anatomical characteristics, aiming for the examination of the plant's adaptive strategies. All things considered, our objective is to compare the wood anatomy of Magnolia ovata (A.St.-Hil.) Spreng. (Magnoliaceae) that occurs in the domains of the cerrado from São Paulo state and Atlantic forest in Santa Catarina state, to verify if there are any differences in the anatomical characteristics between the individuals from these two environments. We intend to check if the cerrado individuals are safer to water conductivity when compared to the Atlantic forest ones and if there are any anatomical trends related to latitude. We will collect wood samples of five individuals from "Palmeira da Serra", Pratânia, São Paulo, a private reserve of cerrado, and five individuals from a private Atlantic forest area in Brusque, Santa Catarina. Microtomy and slides collection will be made according to usual techniques in wood anatomy. For the qualitative and quantitative analysis, we will follow IAWA Committee's (1989) recommendations. We will submit the quantitative data to variance analysis, complemented by the Tukey Test and multivariate statistical analysis in order to see if the anatomical characteristics significantly vary between the two environments. The results will increase the knowledge about the ecological influence in wood anatomy. (AU)
