Abstract

This project refers to the study of spatial distribution of biological populations. Specifically, we turn our attention to how the space heterogeneity and the influence of individuals' spatial memory affect dispersal dynamics of a population and the generation of patterns related to ecological behaviors such as sedentarism, migration and nomadism. The methods used include analytical and numerical study of partial differential equations, and a computational approach using Monte Carlo simulations of movement rules that depend on the individuals' memory. With this study we propose to use the tools of statistical and computational physics and mathematics to understand the mechanisms of movement and find a way to relate them to population distribution patterns. New results at this point would bring great contribution to the area, and would show some of the principles that animals can use to decide their drives. This project should be done in 24 months, beginning in October 1st, 2013. The candidate must perform two scientific visits abroad, to the researchers Mark Lewis (University of Alberta) and William Fagan (University of Maryland). (AU)
