The development and study of multiferroic materials, in particular their electrical and magnetoelectric responses, are directly related to their structure and dynamics of domains (ferroelectric and magnetic). Despite its high potential for use in numerous technological applications few groups have dedicated fundamental studies to the investigation of the domains structures. In part, the inherent difficulty lies in the field of visualization techniques and in the difficulty in producing or disposing of samples and experimental techniques appropriate for this type of research. The methodology for the domain visualization in multiferroic materials, for subsequent correlation with their magnetoelectric properties can be achieved by an approach from ferroelectric materials. The Groupo de Cerâmicas Ferroelétricas (GCF / DF-UFSCar) has extensive experience in the synthesis, characterization and application of ferroelectric materials and multiferroics, which can be considered the most important materials, among those with multifunctional features. However, mainly due to experimental and personal limitations, not too much could be done to investigate the intrinsic properties of the domains (ferroelectric or magnetic) of these materials. This project is proposed viewing to extend the researches to "nanoscale", and to the properties of ferroelectric and magnetic fields, looking for a qualitative "jump" in the investigations of multiferroic materials.The research project has the following objectives:a) to prepare multiferroic materials in the form of nanostructured ceramic bodies (SPS) or bidimensional nanostructures ("RF sputtering"), based on [(Pb) (Fe, B) O3] 1-x + [PbTiO3] x (B = Nb , W, Zr);b) to investigate the microstructure (AFM), the structure of ferroelectric domains (PFM) and magnetic (MFM);c) to characterize and manipulate electrical properties (EFM), dielectric, ferroelectric (PFM) and magnetic (MFM);d) to develop phenomenological models in order to establish a correlation between domain structure and physical properties of ferroelectric and multiferroic materials.
