Abstract

Despite the scattered data from literature about the association between weevils and fig trees, there are strong evidences that these beetles are specialized in using figs for feeding and reproduction. However, little is known about the biology, distribution and evolution of these weevils. The present study aims to known which species of Curculionidae beetles are associated with Ficus in their main biogeographical regions (Neotropical, Afrotropical and Oriental) and to reconstruct the evolutionary scenario of the radiation of weevils on their host fig trees. We will collect molecular and morphological data from weevils of America, Africa and Asia to draw their phylogenetic relationships, and through historical biogeography we intend to associate it with the history of continents. The results of the study will contribute to better understanding the ecology and evolution of figs trees and their associated animals. (AU)
