Abstract

In Brazil, beef cattle and milk based predominantly on use of pastures for livestock feed. These pastures cover extensive areas, constituting the largest commercial herd in the world. The species Brachiaria humidicola is forage more widely grown in Brazilian pastures. Occurs in wetter areas, poor drainage or seasonal flooding, which is why it occupies large areas in the Cerrado and the Amazon region. Native species of the genus Paspalum present potential forage and ornamental. Among them, Paspalum notatum excelled by the great intraspecific variability. Much of the area cultivated for fodder in Brazil is established with exotic cultivars and clonal reproduction. Diversification of grassland is the main way to alleviate the problems arising from monoculture. In this sense, the breeding of forage and the release of new cultivars of tropical forages are an alternative to the diversification of Brazilian pastures. This project aims to contribute to a better understanding of these two species of tropical forage through the generation of new information obtained in the transcriptome analysis and development of molecular markers and genotyping of single nucleotide polymorphism type (SNP). For the implementation of this project, and all the support offered by the laboratory where the research will be carried out, it is said a partnership with Embrapa Southeast Livestock, São Carlos-SP and Embrapa Beef Cattle, Campo Grande-MT.
