Abstract

Solvent extraction protocols for plant antioxidant phenolic compounds are very diverse due to the variation and complexity of phenolic substances and to the variety of vegetable matrices. There are several extractive methods described in the literature and they can be classified as traditional like Soxhlet extraction or modern extractive methods such as the supercritical fluid extraction. Supercritical fluid extraction offers considerable advantages against traditional methods. It is largely applied and a lot interesting to extract different kind of chemical constituents from plants including low-polarity compounds as kaurenoic acid and has also been widely used to optimize phenolic compounds extraction. In this context, the Copaifera langsdorffii was the plant chosen to be studied in this work. C. lagsdorffii is a Brazilian native tree widely used by Brazilian folks for many purposes. The presence of 6 to 10% of phenolic compounds in its dried leaves demonstrates its potential for industrial food applications. However, technological, phytochemical and biological studies of the C. langsdorffii leaves are rare in the literature and the extraction study of the compounds kaurenoic acid and quercitrin from the C. langsdorffii leaves by the supercritical fluid method is an interesting and unpublished work. Besides, the supercritical fluid extraction is an adequate choice because it is environment friendly, solvent and residue free, thus avoiding being harmful to health. By this way, the aim of this project is to study and optimize the kaurenoic acid and quercitrin extraction by supercritical fluid from the C. langsdorffii leaves using the Box-Behnken design. (AU)
