Abstract

The synthetic drugs have been the main form of parasitic control, however, due to its intense and indiscriminate use, there were problems of parasite resistance and residues in foods of animal origin and in the environment. The plant extracts, purified fractions or their isolates can be a tool in reducing the use of synthetic drugs, in addition to prolong the life of the commercial products available today. The phytochemical studies of plant extracts provide information as the nature of bioactives, which allows the monitoring of the quality of extracts and a base for future development of anti-parasitic formulations. Embrapa Southeast Livestock (CPPSE) has the research line of plant extracts on parasitic control of cattle and sheep. We have a specialist in the production of extracts in such a way that they are produced continuously inside of CPPSE research projects, which already has the authorization for scientific purpose activities granted by the MMA and SISBIO (n°. 37006-1). In this proposal, it is intended to carry out a screening of in vitro activity of 100 extracts produced so far on the cattle tick R. (B.) microplus and on gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep, through methodologies recommended by international organisations of veterinary parasitology and standardized at CPPSE. In an interdisciplinary way and with the support of all partners involved, we intend to fractionate and identify classes of metabolites of the extracts most active, as well as to evaluate the anti-parasitic activity of the best candidates in in vivo tests on cattle and sheep parasited in CPPSE.
