ORAL COMMUNICATION AND HEARING SKILLS FOR CHILDREN AND TEENAGERS DEAF IN A PROCESS OF SPEECH INTERVENTION

Abstract

Hearing impairment can significantly alter the development of hearing and oral communication. The impact of hearing loss can be minimized with early and appropriate intervention. Another key aspect is family participation. Parents can also provide important information regarding the hearing and language of their children throughout the therapeutic process. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the time of diagnosis, hearing loss`s degree, age of adaptation and type of electronic device, time of (re)habilitation, family participation and use of listening skills and expressive language of a group of hearing-impaired children and adolescents who participate in a program focusing on the development of auditory function and oral communication. It is a cross-sectional study and document analysis will also be conducted to obtain data on the variables involved in the process of (re) habilitation of participants. The procedures used to assess the frequency of auditory behaviors are Infant-Toddler Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale - IT-MAIS, adapted by Castiquini (1997), and the Meaningful Auditory Infant Scale - MAIS adapted by Castiquini e Bevilacqua (2000). To evaluate the frequency of oral communicative behaviors we will use the Meaningful Use of Speech Scales - MUSS, adapted by Nascimento (1997). In addition, semantic adjustments were made in procedures that assess oral communication and listening skills of older children in order to maintain the goal of the issues, making them applicable for children and teenagers up to the set. The procedures will be answered by parents, written, and scored by the examiner according to the answers and examples presented and transformed into percentages. Afterward, will be held a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the results. The results of this study will provide important information to guide ducts, with emphasis on oral communication and the development of an auditory function. (AU)
