Abstract

This project analise the repercussion of American Civil War in Brazil and Cuba, and also their impact on debates about slavery and in diferents abolition proposals between 1861 and 1888. This research will be done by analyses of news papers, diplomatics letters, parlamentarian discussions, abolicionists projects and brazilians and cubans intelectuals writings.Having slavery as central issue of the American war, that conflict started during the Abraham Lincoln presidency of United States. That conflict was polarized between the North States, who looked forward the national union and slavery emancipation, and the South Confederates States, that wished to keep the slavery.While in the United States the proposal of emacipation have provoked an war, Brazil and Cuba aparently tried not to confront that issue, after all both countries were the last to end that work system in Americas.Regardless of that, the called "good society" of Brazilian empire and Cuban colonial elite, and also their enslaved people followed the process of the war in United States.Therefore, this research's purpose is examine how the informations of war reached Brazil and Cuba, how that news from the conflict was interpretated and had impact on discussions about slavery and abolition in both of those countries.
