Abstract

Currently, research on extraction of cartographic features of interest are motivated mainly by the increasing importance of Geographic Information Systems and the need to acquire and update spatial data. In the field of urban planning spatial data is used for planning and decision making. Therefore, it is imperative that these data are updated and accurate. Thus, the automation of processes for extracting road network is of critical importance. However, what complicates this procedure are the scenes involved which makes the extraction of features of interest in a topic challenging. Furthermore, the system normally used for computational studies of extraction are proprietary systems where the features are locked, making it impossible to study and possibly changes and improvements in these algorithms. Thus, this work is to develop a computer system, called CARTOMORPH, for processing remote sensing images in order to enable use of the functions implemented and allows changes to be made whenever necessary, since this will public domain. To this end, we intend to use techniques digital image processing, focused on mathematical morphology, to enable researchers to develop routines capable of extracting cartographic features of interest present in a digital image. The implementation of the program is of fundamental importance, since it will allow the processing of large files with extensions, which usually can not be achieved by proprietary systems, in addition to providing access to source code, allowing the modification of morphological operations as well as propose new algorithms, which does not happen in the system currently used in the FCT / UNESP and for much of the scientific community. The methodology will include the first implementation of image processing algorithms needed, which are subsequently grouped into a library of functions (CARTOMORPH_LIB). This in turn will be used in the creation of a complete computer system with the development of a simple and intuitive graphical interface to the user. It is intended, in the end, testing of all functionality implemented by comparing the results obtained by the new system with manual calculations and results obtained by other systems already established in the market. Moreover, an analysis of the results obtained with the development system is accomplished, allowing the end that the computer system being developed, the CARTOMORPH, is made available to the scientific community allowing it to be of great use by researchers and users in the area.
