Abstract This study is meant to understand the process of creating Brazilian literature in an international context of book writing, selling and reading, focusing on the case of José de Alencar. In order to do that, it will analyse the booksellers market to identify the presence of Brazilian and foreign books available to Brazilian readers in the city of Rio de Janeiro between 1856 and 1877, and the share of Alencar's books in that market back then. This project is also meant to analyse the critics' views on Alencar´s works, as well as the reviews written by the author in that same time, considering the importance of foreign references in this reflection. Additionally, this study will look into the presence of Alencar in Europe between 1863 and 1907, and analyse the foreign critics' opinion about the writer's works in that same period. (AU) | |
