Hearing evaluation of children with congenital hypothyroidism

Abstract

General objective: To analyse the hearing function of children with Congenital Hypothyroidism (CH). The specific objectives are: to analyse the results obtained on behavioral and electrophysiological evaluation considering the age, gender, right ear and left ear, age at diagnosis, type of CH having as criteria the time of exposure to elevated levels of TSH and/or diminished of T4 Livre and adherence to the treatment of CH; to compare the evaluations of the CH group with the control group. Subjects and Methods: It is intended to realize hearing evaluation on 56 children, being 28 of CH group and 28 of control group, with age between 0 to 24 months. the children of the CH group will be monitored at the Hypothyroidism clinics of the Reference Service for Neonatal Screening of Campinas State University. The audiological evaluation will be done at the Child Audiology Diagnostic Laboratory at CEPRE/FCM/UNICAMP and will be constituted by the procedures: assessment of the Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR), Transient otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) suppression of otoacoustic emissions, tympanometry and behavioral hearing assessment. The cases in which the results of the evaluation changed will be referred to ENT assessment in the Clinical Hospital of Unicamp and cases of hearing loss are referred to the rehabilitation process. Data analysis: All data collected from medical records of children, as well as the results of the assessment hearing will be recorded on data sheets, database and analyzed statistically. The tests applied will be determined later by the healthcare professional in conjunction with the researcher.
