Abstract

We aim at obtaining new paleomagnetic data at the Ediacaran-Cambrian strata of Jifn and Antaq basins, located in Saudi Arabia. The volcano-sedimentary Jifn and Antaq successions comprise, from base to top: mafic volcanics, conglomerate, carbonate and pelites of Umm al 'Aisah e Jifn formations. Both units present several volcanic tuff layers that will provide a high-resolution chronology through (U-Pb dating of zircon grains). Paleomagnetic samples were collected at 92 stratigraphic levels, including sampling for stability tests at folds and conglomerates. This project is part of a larger international effort, gathering together three research groups in order to reconstruct the global paleogeography and infer its relation with important environmental changes (climate, atmosphere and ocean composition) concomitant to the appearance of multi-cellular organisms.
