Evaluation through kinetic analysis of technique of leveling tibial plateau osteotomy (TPLO) to cranial cruciate ligament deficience in dogs with three different kinds of plate

Abstract

Cranial cruciate ligament rupture is the major cause of lameness in dogs and can occur due to degenerative or traumatic causes. It can be associated with aging, abnormalities of conformation and immune-mediated arthropathies. It is a commonly observed disease in large breed dogs and its high prevalence made it one of the most studied diseases in veterinary orthopedics. Despite the wide variety of surgical techniques available, the ideal treatment for this orthopedic condition remains undetermined. Currently techniques have been developed to prevent abnormal movement of the stifle. Dynamic stability is achieved by changing the bone geometry by technique like tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO), currently being the most popular surgeries. There are a lot of models of plates with different manufacturer for TPLO surgery, but there is no agreement among surgeons about the best implant (plate). There are few clinical researches in dogs about stifle and his functionality after TPLO and there is no clinical research focused on different kinds of implants on stabilization of this procedure. A stable fixation of the osteotomy is critical to avoid delay in consolidation and failure of metallic implants. One of the main advantages of TPLO is the early weight-bearing in postoperative period, which can be evaluated subjectively. But the locomotion kinetic analysis in pressure platform is a more objective measurement in the use of the limb during walking. The objective of this study is to compare three different kinds plates on TPLO procedures. Evaluation will be done with subjective and objective assessment via analysis in pressure platform (baropodometry).
