Abstract

Considering that algal communities perform key role in the functioning of aquatic ecosystems, this research aims to assess the algal communities dynamics (phytoplankton, metaphyton, epipelon, and epiphyton) in different equilibrium states. This study aims to develop a simple conceptual model based on the functioning of shallow tropical and also in experimental conditions isolating the effect of P on the algal communities dynamics. This research is part of the project "Influence of spatial heterogeneity on the structure and nutrient status (C, N, P) of periphyton, metaphyton, and phytoplankton in Ninféias Reservoir in the two climatic periods" (FAPESP 2009/52253-4), which was recently finalized. Monthly and bimonthly sampling of physical, chemical and biological will be carried out in three fixed points in the reservoir - one in the pelagic region and two in the littoral. The sampling points are located in the depth gradient, and also take into account the presence and absence of macrophytes stand. Algal communities to compare the structural attributes are expressed in reservoir area. To evaluate the effect of increasing the phosphorus availability (limiting nutrient) on the dynamics of algal communities will be a enrichment experiment with phosphorus addition in mesocosms open bottom. The joint assessment of algal communities can promote a more holistic view of ecosystem functioning, providing a significant advance in knowledge of the ecology of tropical shallow reservoirs. Such knowledge is necessary to develop more efficient tools for monitoring and recovery of tropical aquatic systems.
