The high consumption of liquid fuels and the environmental awareness require the production of renewable fuels at very high volumes. The production of 1st generation ethanol is already consolidated in our country and further increases in production should occur with the development of technologies for 2nd generation ethanol, yielding new mills for integral utilization of sugarcane. To be economically viable, the increase in production should be accompanied by a reduction in water consumption and energy. Thus, this project proposes alternatives to current production of 1st generation ethanol and for the development of 2nd generation ethanol, involving the processing of the individual fractions "rind" and "core" of the stems of sugar cane; the hydrothermal pretreatment of the "core" fraction without sucrose juice extraction; the use of low liquid/solid ratios and the use of subcritical carbon dioxide for the hydrothermal and delignification pre-treatments.
