Culicidae are popularly known as mosquitoes and comprise a monophyletic group within the order Diptera. They are distributed throughout tropical and temperate regions, and currently 3525 species are recognized. The traditional classification is based on morphological characters and despite their medical importance and long history of research, the taxonomy of the group remains incomplete and the classification system is not entirely natural. There are significant gaps in knowledge of the taxonomy of Culicidae, because it is a large group with many species. The aim of this work is to develop a hypothesis with phylogenetic resolution to the level of genera in Culicidae based on the traditional characters of genetic variability and the newly aggregated characters "protein profile" evidenced by mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF). Sequences of various genes of the major taxa be obtained from GenBank and analyzed from phylogenetic point of view. Data of protein profiles evidenced by MALDI-TOF also be added in phylogenetic analyzes, by constructing supermatrix and (or) supertrees. Characters of geometry's wing will be employed additionally as taxonomic markers, especially in species of difficult identification, and used to construct a phenogram. Like other cases from the literature, the combination of different methods may be useful to understand the evolutionary history of the family Culicidae in a holistic mean. (AU)
