The use of origami in the parametric and generative design

Abstract

Origami is the Japanese secular art that works with the paper folding, creating various figures and objects through geometric shapes. Its practice and study are closely related to geometry, which can assist us in understanding the process of creating new folds or the planification of origami. There are several types of existing origami, showing us that the possibilities of creations from it are endless. And it is on this basis that we can also examine the potential uses of origami and its geometry in architectural parametric and generative design. In this project, first will be made a study on the functioning of geometry in origami, mathematics involved in its creation and its potential uses in architecture, analyzing existing models of folds that can be applied to the project and also the studies of projects that have been built using the forms of origami. Then there will be the parametric study and digital modeling, conducting analysis and experimentations with different parameters for different cases and applications in architecture. Together with the digital study there will be the physical study, through the production of models and prototypes. The goal of these studies is to design a pavilion, in which will be applied the geometries of origami, studied through physical and digital models, making structural and environmental analysis of the models, documenting processes and verifying their potential for architectural design.
