Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is the most common form of muscular dystrophy and dogs muscular dystrophy (CXMD) shares genetic and morphological similarities with DMD. The canine model Golden Retriever Muscular Dystrophy GRMD)bearer is among the best animal model for DMD studying . Both DMD and GRMD are recessive X-linked diseases affecting skeletal muscles, smooth, heart and brain. Skeletal muscle represents approximately 40% of total body mass of an healthy individual and plays major role in glucose metabolism. This tissue is responsible for approximately 30% of energy consumption, as well as being a major tissue responsible for the uptake, release and storage of glucose. Considering that dogs affected with muscular dystrophy have significant loss of muscle mass, this project aims to evaluate and compare the glucose, insulin, insulin sensitivity and serum fructosamine parameters in Golden retriever dogs carries and affected by GRMD. Will be used 18 animals aged between two and seven years old, six dogs affected by GRMD, six dogs with the GRMD gene and six healthy dogs. For the evaluation of the glycemia and insulinemia parameters will be employed the postprandial oral ingestion of food. The insulin sensitivity will be assessed by the HOMA index and serum fructosamine will be evaluated through the use of commercial kits. Statistical parametric and nonparametric testing will be used for data analysis. The results obtained will allow the knowledge about the glycemic behavior of GRMD dogs, and therefore, identify possible metabolic changes related to homeostasis of this metabolites in dystrophic animals.
