Abstract

Evidence in the literature have shown that oxidative damage in the ability of metabolically active tissues promote accumulation of triglycerides and increased adiposity, contributing to the development and progression of type 2 diabetes. Due to the role played by mitochondria on the metabolism of nutrients, morphological and functional damage of mitochondria are seen as responsible for this process. Due to the growing number of diabetics and related diseases, prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes are important. In this context, physical training has been widely used due to metabolic adaptations that directly promote the oxidation of lipids as an energy source, and contribute to the reduction of body fat and improves insulin sensitivity. The therapeutic effect of physical training is clear in the literature, however, the mechanisms involved in the prevention of type 2 diabetes are not fully understood. Although previous data obtained by our group and others have shown that activation of AMPK in skeletal muscle and white adipose tissu resulted in improved oxidative capacity associated with the prevention of type 2 diabetes, a knowledge gap still exists on the mitochondrial involvement in this process. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the relative contribution of mitochondrial dynamics in white adipose tissue and skeletal muscle for the prevention of type 2 diabetes through physical training.
