Abstract

Several structures of the central nervous system are involved in triggering stress responses through the release of neurotransmitters and neuromodulators specific. Among these structures, the amygdala is known for its role in cardiovascular, hormonal and behavioral control during aversive situations. The restraint stress is a standard model in our laboratory and has been used to evaluate autonomic changes, hormonal and behavioral disorders due to stress. The ER cause significant increase in neuronal activity of the medial nucleus of the amygdala (MeA) when compared to other amygdaloid nuclei. In addition, previous publications from our group suggest an inhibitory function of the MeA in tachycardiac response induced by ER, while the literature indicates its involvement in the hormonal release (oxytocin and corticosterone) observed during the ER. The opioid system participates of the mediating cardiovascular responses, including those associated with aversive situations. Furthermore, was showing the presence of peptides and opioid receptors in amygdala, suggesting the existence of a functional opioid neurotransmission that structure. Based on the facts mentioned above, the hypothesis of this project is that the MeA opioid neurotransmission is involved in the modulation of autonomic hormonal responses evoked by ER. Pilot experiment demonstrated the administration of naloxone in the MeA affects the cardiovascular response evoked by ER, indicating the viability of the project. (AU)
