Study on the creep phenomenon of Ti-6Al-4V submitted to TiAl coating deposited by PVD plasma-assisted technique

Abstract

Ti-6Al-4V accounts for 60% of world production and a large portion focuses on making components where creep resistance is crucial for applications in high temperatures. However, the high reactivity and poor resistance to wear contribute to reduction in creep life. There are no studies in the literature on the interaction of the creep phenomenon and TiAlN PVD coating in Ti-6Al-4V. In this context, the objective will be to continue the studies with Ti6Al4V. These studies were initiated in 2001 and had a major breakthrough with a research project supported by FAPESP (proc. 2007/54987-0) during the period from 12/01/07 to 06/30/10. The excellent results obtained by surface treatments on creep resistance of this alloy motivated this new research. In this work, the effect of TiAlN PVD coating on the creep behavior of Ti6Al4V alloy will be evaluated. The studies will be complemented with microstructural analysis and characterization of surface coating using the techniques of X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and microhardness measurements.(AU)
