The intensification of agriculture and the use of pesticides has led to large amounts of these compounds and their derivatives in soils and aquatic environments. To minimize the presence of these xenobiotic compounds in the medium, have been suggested bioremediation techniques which uses the activity of micro-organisms to eliminate or reduce these pollutants. The attack aromatics and chlorinated by micro-organisms or their enzymes free in the medium, can lead to desirable biodegradation process, resulting derivatives chemically simpler and less toxic to the total mineralization of the compound. The present work aims to study the potential degradation of the herbicide diuron by bacteria isolated from soil cultivation of sugarcane with a history of application of this herbicide, identify the metabolites generated and assess their toxic potential using aquatic animals. Will evaluate the toxicity of the metabolites generated in fish, using as endpoints comet assay, which identifies damage to DNA of organisms and enzymes biotransformation, in order to check whether the metabolites are more or less toxic than diuron.
