Currently, the subfamily Glandulocaudinae comprises three genera, Lophiobrycon, Glandulocauda and Mimagoniates, and ten species, distributed in freshwater environments of eastern and southern Brazil, Paraguay, and northeastern Uruguay. Its members include small neotropical fishes, whose degree of morphological and behavioral specialization, as well as the distributional patterns of the species are of great value for evolutionary studies and understanding biogeographical patterns of South American freshwater fishes. Although studies on systematics and biogeography carried out recently represent considerable progress for defining the group, preliminary analyses of recently collected material revealed novel aspects concerning the distribution of allopatric populations, especially in Glandulocauda species and Mimagoniates microlepis. The new data indicate the need for further studies using phylogeographic tools to understand the historical and biogeographical evolution of the group. This project aims to analyze the speciation processes that led to the current distribution pattern of the mentioned species, using a phylogeographic approach, including the analysis of molecular data.
