The nature of the devitrification process is a fundamental problem in glass science and governs their final stability. The aim of this project is the characterization of the molecular structures of various glasses - using various NMR techniques - and their possible correlation with the nucleation and crystallization mechanisms. In previous studies emerged the idea that there may be a relationship of the nucleation mechanism (surface - heterogeneous nucleation or volume - homogeneous nucleation) with the degree of similarity/difference between the molecular structure of a given glass and its respective isochemical crystal . We hypothesize that the facility of internal homogeneous nucleation observed in a few glasses is due to the topological similarity (chains, rings, clusters) between the structure of glass and its respective isochemical crystal. We will study several selected vitreous systems - borates, silicates and phosphates - by various NMR techniques and also some complementary methods (XPS, Raman, FTIR, XRD and thermal analysis) to get a clear picture about the glass structure, and thus obtain accurate information about the topological characteristics to investigate the validity of our hypothesis. That way we may significantly contribute to the understanding of the nucleation and crystallization mechanisms in glasses.
