Abstract

The continuous use of removable dentures can foster oral infectious diseases such as denture stomatitis, which is associated to precarious oral hygiene habits and denture biofilm. The incorporation of an antiseptic agent in denture bases has great preventive and therapeutic potentials against such pathologic processes, although it needs further investigation regarding its feasibility. The aim of this protocol is to evaluate the viability of incorporating cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), a compound commonly found in mouthwashes, in a denture base acrylic resin in terms of antimicrobial effects and physical properties of the base material tested. A series of assays will employ resin specimens containing different CPC concentrations. The antimicrobial activity of incorporated CPC will be determined for Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, Candida tropicalis, Candida dubliniensis, Lactobacillus casei, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus sanguis and Streptococcus mutans. Other properties to be studied are flexural strength, Knoop hardness and color stability of the specimens. The incorporation of methacrylic acid will be also investigated as a manner to minimize possible drawbacks in terms of physical properties and to promote sorption of CPC from surrounding medium.
