Abstract

The main objective of this project is to analyze the geographic distribution of jobs and establishments from the commerce and service sectors in Brazil. It will be given special attention to the economic and productive role played by middle-sized cities in the context of contemporary territorial division of labor. This research complements the Thematic Project entitled Economic Logic and Spatial Practices Contemporary: Cities and Consumption, submitted to FAPESP under process n. 2011/20155-3. A wide bibliography about the new consumption practices, productive and economic restructuring, the territorial division of labor, the urban and the cities restructuring, among other related topics, will be contrasted with the analysis of data from the Annual Social Information Report (RAIS), related to jobs and establishments registered in Brazilian municipalities in 1995 and 2005. The period was chosen due to the macroeconomic changes promoted in the first half of the 1990s, justified by the methodological circumstances of the empiric analysis. The aim is to contribute to the understanding of the role played by the middle-sized cities in the expansion of the circulation and consumption in Brazil.
