This project aims to unfold a survey entitled "Republicanism in Minas Gerais: the oligarchies of south of Minas Gerais at the end of the Empire and the First Republic" developed for obtaining a Ph.D. in History at Universidade Estadual Paulista Julio de Mesquita Filho - UNESP / Franca between 2009 and 2012. In this work, we understand the emergence and expansion of the republican movement in end of century XIX and the mechanisms used by the regional political elite of south of Minas Gerais to perpetuate themselves in power during the consolidation of the republican regime. This research counted with support Fapesp.Although our thesis has focused on changes in the political arena, transformations of all kinds can be seen in the country at the turn of the nineteenth to the twentieth century. With extensive documentation on the interior of Minas Gerais, we formulated new questions: how the region has adapted to the various processes of political transformation, economic, social and cultural which spread through the country? How it has adapted to the processes of urbanization, abolition of slavery, expansion of railroads, development of coffee plantations and other developments? Within this myriad of changes we intend to study the coffee producing region in the end of nineteenth and beggining twentieth century, that catalyzed the expansion of railroads and the urbanization process. The analysis, for so much, it will be done through documentation of the Arquivo Público Mineiro that discusses the production to coffee of the South of Minas Gerais, your geographical distribution and concentration in each one of the municipal districts that compose the area. The choice of this theme is justified because it marks the expansion of capitalism in the countryside. We take as an object of study the south of Minas region, which since the eighteenth century had emphasized political power because of the importance of their activities related to domestic supply, according specialized literature, but it needed to "reinvent" itself the second half of the nineteenth century in proportion as political and economic transformations were taking place in the country.
