Abstract

Photoaging has been a subject of great interest in the cosmetic and dermatological areas. Thus, it is important to characterize the photodamaged skin, as well as the development of appropriate dermocosmetic formulations directed to the proposed end. Vitamins A and E and its derivatives have emerged as active substances for this purpose, and based on this concept, we propose a novel compound, the tocoretinate (ester of all-trans retinoic acid and D-´-tocopherol), which presents itself as a potential alternative to retinoic acid to improve photodamaged skin. The aim of this study is the characterization of skin changes resulting from photoaging and development, stability evaluation and clinical efficacy of cosmetic formulations containing tocoretinate, retinyl palmitate and tocopheryl acetate, as well as the elucidation of these active substances effects using Reflectance Confocal Microscopy. For this purpose, formulations containing or not the active substances will be assessed for its stability, skin compatibility and efficacy, as well as on the skin penetration. Previously to the clinical efficacy study, the characterization of photodamaged skin on the face and back of hands will be accomplished through self-assessment questionnaires, investigator scores, and objective measurements by biophysical and imaging of the skin techniques, allowing assessing characteristics of the cellular level of the epidermis. These techniques will also be applied in the clinical efficacy of the formulations, together to the sensory evaluation and efficacy perception.
