Bioluminescence, in beetles, occurs mainly within the families Elateriade, Lampyridae and Phengodidae (Elateroidea). The origin of bioluminescence within the superfamily Elateroidea is still a mystery, due to the convergence between luminescent and non luminescent families, mainly in the Elateridae family. The phylogeny of these families is not clear yet; different molecular markers display drastically differences results. Analyses of the luciferases amino acid sequences indicate the proximity between Lampyridae and Phengodidae families; however molecular data demonstrate that the Elateridae family is phylogenetically closer to Phengodidae. Therefore, in order to better understand the Neotropical Elateroidea phylogeny and bioluminescence origin in these families, we aim to sequence the complete mitochondrial genome of Brazilian species belonging to Elateridae and Phengodidae families.
