Abstract

Being the Greek theater an integrating activity of the set of practices dedicated to Dionysus, the extra textual entailments between this god and the dramatic performances are notorious. However, judging from the surviving plays, his presence is rare in the tragic fables and Euripides' Bacchae is the only one in which he appears as a character. But it is relevant to remember that the satyr drama was also composed by the tragic poets as the fourth play of the tragic tetralogy perfomed at the City Dionysia and guaranteed its entailment with the god through the satyr chorus, obligatory presence in this genre. This study intends to investigate the Dionysian elements, above all, concerning the lexic, of Euripides' Cyclops, the only satyr drama preserved. Our assumption is that there can be a Dionysian vocabulary shared by tragedy and the satyr drama. The intention is to find in the text of Euripides' Bacchae a series of typical words from the Dionysian semantic field, such as "bakkheuma" that appears in the very first verses of the Cyclops, and check their presence in the 375 initial verses of that satyr drama, which will be examined in its original and translated to Portuguese.
