Abstract

Layered double Hydroxides (LDHs) are anionic clays that have attracted enormous interest in scientific studies. Such solids can be synthesized in laboratory by using several methods and kinds of divalent and trivalent metals. LDHs possesses intercalation properties, flame retardant effects and eco-compatibility depending on the metallic composition. In this context, LDHs show great potential to develop biodegradable plastic with improved properties. In this BEPE project, it is proposed the development of biodegradable films based on pectin and starch, and the incorporation of HDL MgAl and CaAl in these materials through continuous casting. The continuous casting is a novel approach in developing LDH-based nanocomposites and has tremendous potential in improving the dispersion and properties of these materials. The MgAl and CaAl LDHs will be synthesized by co-precipitation and incorporated into pectin- and starch-based aqeous solutions. The microstructure and properties of the LDH/pectin and LDH/starch bionanocomposites will be studied by X-ray diffraction, FTIR spectroscopy, electron microscopies (SEM and TEM), mechanical tests, water vapour transmission rate determinations and other techniques.
