Abstract

ABSTRACT: Hearing plays a decisive role in the acquisition and development of speech and oral language in the first months of life of newborns. Thus, the audiological diagnostic has a key role to evidence hearing loss early, contributing to the early intervention period for stimulation of language and hearing in newborns. AIM: To analyze the audiological features in newborns, low birthweight; anoxia / hypoxia and congenital infections, who were hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit and / or Intermediate Care Facility CAISM. METHODS: A cross-sectional prospective cohort study. The hearing screening program will be held at CAISM, before hospital discharge of newborns admitted to the ICU, and the examination conducted by Auditory Brainstem Evoked Response - Automatic. Approximately 400 newborns are going to be submitted to the hearing screening process. The audiological diagnostic will be held on infants who fail the screening process, approximately 20 newborns. Audiological evaluation will be conducted in the program of Audiological Diagnostic located at CEPRE / FCM, and shall consist of the following procedures: medical history, evaluation of the conditions of the middle ear, application of Auditory Brainstem Evoked Response, Otoacoustic Emissions and Transient test. In case of any abnormal disturbance in the audiological evaluation, newborns will be sent to the Otorhinolaryngology department at HC/UNICAMP. The infants with hearing loss are going to be sent for selection / adaptation and provision of hearing aid. All data collected and results will be recorded in an electronic database. And they will be tabulated and analyzed statistically. All the information will be kept confidentionally.
