Abstract

The mucociliary transport, a vital lung defense mechanism, is deficient in patients with COPD. It is known that physical exercise and autonomic stimulation influence mucociliary clearance, however the relation between aerobic training and autonomic nervous system the improvement of lung defense mechanism is still unclear. Objective: To evaluate the response of acute and chronic mucociliary transport and behavior of the autonomic nervous system of patients with COPD undergoing an aerobic training as well as investigate possible association between these variables. Methods: Individuals diagnosed with COPD in both sexes, aged over 45 years be subject to a 12 weeks of aerobic training and assessed by mucociliary transport through test of saccharine transit time (TST) and the autonomic nervous system activity through heart rate variability (HRV). For comparison, will be evaluated about the same variables a control group, with individuals diagnosed with COPD. Statistical analysis: Will use the statistical program Graphpad Prism ®. The normality of the data will be assessed by the Shapiro-Wilk test. For intergroup analysis will be used unpaired t test or Mann-Whitney test. The study of TTS and HRV variables will be analyzed by the technique of analysis of variance for repeated measures model in independent group, with the additional test for multiple comparisons of Bonferroni or Dunn, as the adherence of the data to Gaussian distribution. Correlations will be evaluated using the Pearson or Spearman coefficients. The significance level used will be p<0.05. (AU)
